Despite my recommendation, my client has said they do not want a valuation conducted at their house. Is it compulsory?
The voluntary valuation of building and inventory service of contents are not compulsory. We do however highly recommend that your client opts for these services for the following reasons:
- We cover the upfront costs of the valuation and inventory exercise;
- In return, the Average condition is waived from the policy, so all claims are paid ground up without unfair adjustments;
- This exercise enables us to fast track claims, especially those large losses where the task of compiling a post-loss inventory is daunting, especially at a time of often severe trauma;
- The exercise also assists in providing underwriters with risk information, which enables us to provide your clients with pro-active risk management advice.

What new car hire policies are available?
There are three options available – basic, automatic and upgraded automatic
Option One (Basic Cover)
R40.00 per month: All policies include this basic cover unless otherwise stated. The type of vehicle the client receives is a group “C” vehicle which is a manual car with air conditioning, ABS and power steering.
Option Two (Automatic)
An additional premium of R20.00 is levied on the policy. The client receives a group “D” vehicle such as a Chev Aveo Auto, with airbags, air conditioning, power steering and ABS.
Option Three (Upgraded Automatic)
An additional premium of R40.00 is levied on the policy. The client receives a group “H” vehicle such as a BMW 3 Series or an Audi A4 automatic with airbags, air conditioning, power steering and ABS.
Points to bear in mind
- If the client drives an automatic vehicle he will have to choose either option two or three should they wish to continue driving an automatic vehicle
- All new business requests for quotes should indicate which option the client desires
- The type of car hire will be stated clearly on the schedule
- All the car hire contracts include the following unlimited kilometres, car accident damage cover ,car theft cover, airport and tourism levies (no additional cost to the client)
- Fuel deposit for the insured’s own account
As an added bonus under MUA’s new policy, should the client be involved in a motor vehicle accident in the hired vehicle and the excess is greater than the excess payable under his MUA policy, we will reimburse the client with the difference.

My client has contacted me to say that their house is suffering from subsidence damage. Are they covered and if not, does MUA offer full or limited cover for subsidence and landslip damage?
MUA gives full cover for subsidence and landslip. We do not charge an extra premium for this additional cover, however; it is necessary to underwrite the risk.
MUA therefore requests that the insured completes a subsidence and landslip questionnaire, whereafter the risk will be assessed by an MUA underwriter and then full cover will be granted.

My client recently had a serious accident at work which has left him physically disabled and he now has to use a wheelchair to get around. He has asked me if his insurance policy will help to pay for any modifications to his house to accommodate this?
There is an extension under the Building, House Contents and Motorpolicy that can assist in the event of necessary changes to a home/vehicle due to physical injury.
This would be effective in the event of the policyholder having to use a wheelchair for moving around, following a physical injury.
The wording, adapted to include both home and motor is based on the following:
“The insurer will pay fair and reasonable costs, up to the amount stated in the schedule towards essential changes to your home /vehicle that you need to make because of a permanent and identifiable physical disability which:
- Is caused directly by a sudden and unexpected accident
- Occurs during the period for which you are insured
- Results in you having to rely on a wheelchair to be able to move around”

There are three varying sets of criteria for the zero excess – buildings, contents and motor.
Should your clients meet all of the criteria for either the buildings, content or motor then MUA will not charge an excess on their claim.
Criteria for Buildings
- If the policy holder is over 55 years old
- All claims where the quantum exceeds R100000.00
Criteria for House Contents
- If the policy holder is over 55
- All the automatic extensions of cover
Criteria for Motor
- If the main driver and spouse are over 55 years of age and have held a license for over 5 years
- If the vehicle is less than 12 months old from the date it was first registered
- If an approved, operational MUA tracking device was installed when the vehicle was stolen or hijacked
