Executive Home
Despite my recommendation, my client has said they do not want a valuation conducted at their house. Is it compulsory?
The voluntary valuation of building and inventory service of contents are not compulsory. We do however highly recommend that your client opts for these services for the following reasons:
  • We cover the upfront costs of the valuation and inventory exercise;
  • In return, the Average condition is waived from the policy, so all claims are paid ground up without unfair adjustments;
  • This exercise enables us to fast track claims, especially those large losses where the task of compiling a post-loss inventory is daunting, especially at a time of often severe trauma;
  • The exercise also assists in providing underwriters with risk information, which enables us to provide your clients with pro-active risk management advice.
My client has contacted me to say that their house is suffering from subsidence damage. Are they covered and if not, does MUA offer full or limited cover for subsidence and landslip damage?
MUA gives full cover for subsidence and landslip.  We do not charge an extra premium for this additional cover, however; it is necessary to underwrite the risk.

MUA therefore requests that the insured completes a subsidence and landslip questionnaire, whereafter the risk will be assessed by an MUA underwriter and then full cover will be granted.

My client recently had a serious accident at work which has left him physically disabled and he now has to use a wheelchair to get around. He has asked me if his insurance policy will help to pay for any modifications to his house to accommodate this?
There is an extension under the Building, House Contents and Motorpolicy that can assist in the event of necessary changes to a home/vehicle due to physical injury.

This would be effective in the event of the policyholder having to use a wheelchair for moving around, following a physical injury.

The wording, adapted to include both home and motor is based on the following:

“The insurer will pay fair and reasonable costs, up to the amount stated in the schedule towards essential changes to your home /vehicle that you need to make because of a permanent and identifiable physical  disability which:

  1. Is caused directly by a sudden and unexpected accident
  2. Occurs during the period for which you are insured
  3. Results in you having to rely on a wheelchair to be able to move around”

Executive Motor
Do foreigners need to obtain an endorsement to drive on South African roads? Does this include the SADEC regions?
As per Section 23 and Regulation 110 of the National Road Traffic Act, a license authorising the driving of a motor vehicle issued in any county as well as an international driving permit shall suffice, provided the following is adhered to:
  1. The license must be for the class of motor vehicle the driver is driving.
  2. The license must be issued in an official language of South Africa (or have a translation of that license and a validity certificate attached)
  3. The license must indicate the type(s) of vehicle for which the license is valid.
  4. The license must contain or have attached to it a photograph and signature of the holder/driver.
If the driver’s license meets the above mentioned requirements, he/she does not have to have it endorsed. Please note this only applies to foreigners visiting or temporarily living in RSA.

If the driver becomes a resident of South Africa, he/she will need to have their license converted to a valid South African Card Type driver’s license at a driving license testing centre within 5 years of receiving their permanent residence permit/status.

When the holder of a license or the holder of an international driving permit return to the Republic to resume permanent residence, such license or permit shall no longer be deemed to be a valid license after one year from the date of return.

What is MUA's security requirements for smaller towns where some homes will not necessarily have alarm systems?
We will consider these risks on an individual basis and look at the clients current security measures in place (ie: burglar bars and security gates), claims history and sums insured. The risk will then be underwritten accordingly.
Is the valuation compulsory and what if the client does not agree with the value?
No, the valuation is not compulsory. Should the client decide not to have a valuation done, we then remove the Average Waiver Benefit and average will then apply, if at the time of a loss, it is found that the client is under-insured. Where a client does not agree with a valuation, the situation will be dealt with on a merit basis.
Why do we not offer excess waiver on vehicles?
Our policy already has certain built-in excess waivers namely when a driver is 55 years or older and has a drivers license for more than 5 years, where the vehicle is less than 12 months old and if you have an approved tracking system installed in your vehicle the excess will be waivered.

Yes it does, it is however an additional R10 a month to include Roadside Assitance cover. Should you select this extension, R10 will be automatically included in your risk premium.
Why are valuations not carried out every three years as mentioned at launch of the Home product?
These valuations can be done should the client request it, the reason for the valuations not being carried out automatically is the fact that clients often do not want any further intrusion into their homes.
Why do we have to pay for car hire?
The clients premium has not changed, should the client select car hire with his or her policy the risk premium previously included the risk premium and car hire. This has however changed so that the risk premium and car hire charges are shown as seperate amounts, it is by law that MUA  shows the client how it is broken up as the car hire is supplied by a third party.
