Defining the difference between private and business use for your client’s vehicle:

Short description:
Just a friendly reminder for your clients in order to avoid motor claim repudiations, please check with your client what their use is for their vehicles, as MUA has three different categories namely Private Use, Private and Commuting Use, and Business Use.
Content:
See below for definitions of these three categories:

Private use:
  • If the vehicle is described in the schedule as ‘private’, it may be used for social and domestic purposes only.

Private and commuting use:

  • If the use of the vehicle is stated in the schedule as ‘private and commuting’ (travelling to work and back), the vehicle may be used for social and domestic purposes, for journeys between the client’s home and permanent place of business or any other destination they may travel for any purpose other than business.
Business use:
  • Use in the type of profession or occupation (work) stated on your insurance proposal and for which you earn a salary, a wage, other income or remuneration. If the use of the vehicle is stated in your schedule as ‘business’ (work), the vehicle may be used for social and domestic purposes, for journeys between your home and permanent place of business (work), and for use in your business or any other destination you may travel to for any purpose including business.

Kindly note that Business use, excludes, commercial travelling or for any business trade or work, other than as stated in the proposal form of the policy an example of this exclusion would be the carriage of good.

A reminder to your clients regarding the “Removal of their Contents” from their homes:

The insurer will cover you for loss of or damage to your contents under this section of your policy while:
  1. Professional furniture removal contractors remove your contents during a permanent change of address; or
  2. Your contents are in transit to or from a furniture storage or a bank safe deposit; or
  3. Your contents are in transit to or from the place of purchase or a place of repair to your permanent residence.

Provided that:
  • Fragile items such as glass or china have been packed by the same professional furniture removal contractors before they are removed
  • You have taken reasonable steps to protect the contents and ensure that every item is given care and protection in line with its value
  • The contents are not insured in any other way

You will be responsible for an additional excess payment of R5000

Should the circumstance arise where your clients will be removing contents from their home on their own or making use of circumstances/methods not covered above, it is very important to advise them to notify yourselves and in turn notify MUA Insurance Acceptances beforehand.  This will enable MUA to correctly underwrite the risk to avoid disappointment at the time of a claim.  This individually tailored cover will still be subject to precautionary measures and an additional excess.

The excess stated in your clients schedule for locks and keys will apply.

However, please inform your clients about their obligations regarding their property and motor insurance. Your clients must take all responsible steps to:
  • Prevent accidents, bodily injury, loss or damage
  • Keep the insured property safe, and ensure that every item is taken care of and looked after according to its value
  • Maintain the insured property in good condition and repair when necessary
An example of negligence would involve keys left hanging on a rack inside a home located near to the entrance and the door or gate is left open for any intruder to access the keys, or hanging the keys in a garage door whilst the garage door is left open, encouraging theft.

There are been a few new additions to the MUA family in 2012. Find out more about our new recruits below…
Content:
Congratulations Geraldine Willemse

Geraldine Willemse, who joined the MUA Durban branch as a Representative (under Supervision) in Personal Underwriting in October 2011 on a temporary basic, has joined the MUA family as a permanent staff member as of January 2012.

Geraldine first entered the insurance industry in May 1983 as an underwriter for the Personal Department at Mutual and Federal. She worked for various brokers including Alexander Forbes, Gary Leech, and Nanini 390cc and obtained experience not only in the Personal department but in claims, commercial and accounts.

As a Representative in Personal Underwriting her currentduties are to attend to the issuing of policies; underwrite policies; and process amendments for brokers assigned to her in the Durban area. She says she is still trying to come to terms with the new system as each company has a different system and different ways of underwriting.

In order to be successful in the underwriting field she believes that having a good knowledge and understanding of what is required to underwrite a policy is of utmost importance as well as being able to communicate with brokers. Each query that comes into the office is different as each person’s needs are different.

The biggest challenges for her include: being able to communicate with people; assisting people with their needs; and guiding them in the right direction while also ensuring that they have the correct insurance for their needs.

Her advice to people wanting work in the personal underwriting department: “Be prepared for hard work, listen to what your superiors advise and make notes. Do it because you enjoy it and that is what you want to do, not just because it is a job.”

Her favourite way to relax includes reading Danielle Steele; being around people older than herself and listening to their stories; going to movies; visiting the beach; and just sitting and watching people.

Geraldine’s personal motto is: “Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you.”

Welcome to the family Yvette Hargreaves

Yvette Hargreaves joined the MUA branch Cape Town to form part of the fundamental team in the Underwriting / Administration Department.

Before being appointed as an Underwriter for the MUA Cape Town branch she worked for many short term insurance brokers. While working for other brokers she often worked with MUA and knew MUA’s policy fairly well, which enticed her to join the MUA family.

Her new role involves assisting clients and amending clients’ policies with endorsements and quotations and assisting in general administration in the underwriting departments.

She says that the people you work with is one of the most important parts of being successful in one’s job so gaining everyone’s respect and trust on the personal level is crucial for her.

The biggest challenges facing Yvette include: getting through her RPL assignments and Regulatory Exams; getting to know the brokers and clients; and building new relationships from scratch.

Her advice to people wanting work in the Underwriting department is to first try to be accurate then efficient.

Yvette likes to swim or go to the beach to relax.

“Life is only hard for those that are weak,” is her personal motto.

Since November 2010 MUAseized the requirement for copies of the registration documentation of a vehicle at time of inception on the policy.

Since November 2010 MUAseized the requirement for copies of the registration documentation of a vehicle at time of inception on the policy.

This was made possible due to improved technology and with the E-Natis system we are able to access and confirm the necessary information without inconveniencing policyholders or brokers.

We only require the vehicle VIN number, Engine number and registration number. By receiving this info at inception of the policy we are in a position to settle claims without unnecessary delay or without the need to obtain these documents from financial institutions when the insured vehicles are under hire purchase agreements.
