Short description:
Just a friendly reminder for your clients in order to avoid motor claim repudiations, please check with your client what their use is for their vehicles, as MUA has three different categories namely Private Use, Private and Commuting Use, and Business Use.
Content:
See below for definitions of these three categories:
Private use:
- If the vehicle is described in the schedule as ‘private’, it may be used for social and domestic purposes only.
Private and commuting use:
- If the use of the vehicle is stated in the schedule as ‘private and commuting’ (travelling to work and back), the vehicle may be used for social and domestic purposes, for journeys between the client’s home and permanent place of business or any other destination they may travel for any purpose other than business.
Business use:
- Use in the type of profession or occupation (work) stated on your insurance proposal and for which you earn a salary, a wage, other income or remuneration. If the use of the vehicle is stated in your schedule as ‘business’ (work), the vehicle may be used for social and domestic purposes, for journeys between your home and permanent place of business (work), and for use in your business or any other destination you may travel to for any purpose including business.
Kindly note that Business use, excludes, commercial travelling or for any business trade or work, other than as stated in the proposal form of the policy an example of this exclusion would be the carriage of good.

- The theft or disappearance of keys or remote controls
- The reasonable belief that an unauthorised person may have a duplicated key, cardkey or remote control
The excess stated in your clients schedule for locks and keys will apply.
However, please inform your clients about their obligations regarding their property and motor insurance. Your clients must take all responsible steps to:
- Prevent accidents, bodily injury, loss or damage
- Keep the insured property safe, and ensure that every item is taken care of and looked after according to its value
- Maintain the insured property in good condition and repair when necessary
An example of negligence would involve keys left hanging on a rack inside a home located near to the entrance and the door or gate is left open for any intruder to access the keys, or hanging the keys in a garage door whilst the garage door is left open, encouraging theft.

Vehicle insurance excesses
Submitted by Michaela on Tue, 2012-03-13 13:30Image/Video:

Short description:
Your chances of being involved in a vehicle accident are about one in 10 every year, and insured drivers virtually always have to pay an amount upfront via the excess on their policy.
Content:
Last year, the South African police recorded about a million vehicle accidents, which are estimated to have involved as many as 1.8 million cars.
“If you take into account that there are 9.5 million licensed cars and even more unlicensed cars on South African roads, your chances of being involved in an accident are at least one in 10 each year,” Gary Ronald, a spokesman for Arrive Alive, says.
If you are in an accident or your car is stolen and you need to claim on your car insurance, you need to be aware of the terms and conditions around the excess amount you are liable for.
Sometimes it is only when they come to claim that first-time policyholders realise they have to pay an excess, Gari Dombo, the managing director of Alexander Forbes Insurance, says.

Road accident scheme gets thumbs up

Short description:
The approval of Government’s proposed Road Accident Benefit Scheme (RABS) – recently announced as the successor to the much-maligned Road Accident Fund (RAF) – brings hope for much-needed change to the current system.
Content:
This is according to Marike Stals, Legal and Compliance Manager at MUA Insurance Acceptances, who says the RAF was introduced to enable innocent victims, who have no recourse against uninsured or negligent motor vehicle drivers, to receive some type of compensation.
However, over time several issues arose with regards to the affordability and sustainability of the system, including long settlement delays and a disparity between the income of the scheme and its liabilities.

Content:
Since November 2010 MUAseized the requirement for copies of the registration documentation of a vehicle at time of inception on the policy.
This was made possible due to improved technology and with the E-Natis system we are able to access and confirm the necessary information without inconveniencing policyholders or brokers.
We only require the vehicle VIN number, Engine number and registration number. By receiving this info at inception of the policy we are in a position to settle claims without unnecessary delay or without the need to obtain these documents from financial institutions when the insured vehicles are under hire purchase agreements.

We have recently seen a dramatic increase in under-27 drivers either wanting insurance or being involved in car accidents where the policies are endorsed with restrictive endorsements. So we wanted to find a way to offer our clients an alternative that would make everyone happy.

We have recently seen a dramatic increase in under-27 drivers either wanting insurance or being involved in car accidents where the policies are endorsed with restrictive endorsements. So we wanted to find a way to offer our clients an alternative that would make everyone happy.
The reason behind having a no under-27 rule boils down to the driver’s short driving experience, which we have found typically results in a higher number of accidents compared with more experienced drivers. To counter this, it has been decided that we will look at not penalising the under 27 drivers with additional excesses and/or restrictions if they have passed an advanced driving course, with the cost of the course for the client’s own account.
Please find a list of some of the advanced driving courses we know of below, should you need some more specific options please let Michelle Bellin from Head Office know and we will source a contact in the area you require.

Remote control locking scam update

Short description:
Many of you have heard about the recent scam whereby some third party remote controls are used to interfere with a vehicle’s remote control locking system resulting in theft from motor vehicles with no sign of visible or forcible entry.
Content:
Many of you have heard about the recent scam whereby some third party remote controls are used to interfere with a vehicle’s remote control locking system resulting in theft from motor vehicles with no sign of visible or forcible entry.
It is believed that these remotes are set to the same frequency as some manufacturer’s remotes, which then jam the vehicle’s remote control frequencies, preventing the electronic central locking system from operating successfully.
Some clients have been submitting insurance claims believing that this is what has happened when they return to their vehicle to find contents stolen without any sign of a break-in.
As we all know, theft of unspecified all risks items, with no sign of forcible entry is often repudiated by insurers, however, we have made a plan for our valued clients.
For all victims of the scam we are offering a maximum claim of R5000.00 with an excess of R1 000.00 for unspecified items. Specified items will be covered up to the sum insured, even if stolen from unoccupied vehicle without signs of forcible and violent entry. Please be sure to stick to these limits and advise your clients accordingly on appropriate safety measures – such as ensuring their vehicles are locked before walking away from them – to avoid falling victim to the scam.
