Without the relevant contact information and detailed description of the accident, the process becomes delayed and there might be insufficient evidence to contest the third party version of events. The policyholder has to be aware that a third party claim influences his claims history and still remains a claim under the policy. The insured’s assistance will be needed during these matters.

Does my client have to pay a basic excess when reporting a claim?

Cover for items stolen from unoccupied vehicles is subject to signs of forcible and violent entry. During 2011 many press releases were focused on thieves interfering with the locking devices of vehicles by way of using household remotes to block the signal of the vehicle remotes.  Therefore items were stolen from vehicles without signs of forcible and violent entry into the vehicle.

Technically when items are stolen from an unattended vehicle without signs of forcible and violent entry, it will not be covered by the insurance policy.  MUA and Compass created a way of adding a benefit to the policyholder in such an instance, covering items up to R 5 000.

Chauffeuring services

We have seen a massive increase in the use of chauffeuring services i.e. Goodfellas being used by our clients nationally. We applaud the pro-active risk management taken and have updated our cover accordingly. In future, driver restrictions relating to the age of the driver will be waived where our insured is making use of a chauffeuring service. Please encourage your clients to take up these services and let’s work together at reducing drunk driving on SA Roads.

Reporting claims to the SAPS

It has recently come to our attention that clients are expected to pay a R1000 fine to the SAPS if the crime is reported more than 24 hours after it occurred. We suggest our brokers bring this to clients’ attention as this matter has caused some great anxiety with our clients at the time of a loss.
Cover for items stolen out of vehicles where there are no signs of break-in.

Recently, the number of claims where items are stolen out of unattended vehicles, with no signs of break-in have increased dramatically. It is believed that the use of remote control units to interrupt the locking signal of vehicles are to blame for this trend. In the spirit of treating our customers fairly, we have decided to grant cover for these claims up to a limit of R5000 and subject to R1000 excess. Prior to this change, there was no cover for this type of claim.

Full Windscreen cover

We have recently done away with the R30 000 limitation on windscreen claims. In addition, we have introduced an option for clients to have their windscreens replaced by an imported SABS approved alternative, in which case there will be no excess applicable. We wish to advise our brokers to discuss this option with their clients, as the standard windscreen replacement option carries a percentage based excess which can be very expensive.
