One minute with Dawie Loots
Tell us about you...
I grew up in the Northern Cape and became a Capetonian in 2005. I am a Chartered Accountant by trade and amateur musician. My wife is also a Chartered Accountant and we’ve been married for 12 years this year (despite her being subjected to my amateur musicianship at home!)
Tell us about a few business accomplishments that you are proud of?
From a professional point of view, I am really proud of qualifying as a CA at the age of 23, after completing all my studies on a part-time basis. This taught me that hard work always pays off.
At MUA, being part of the team of people that is responsible for the growth and success of the business over the last couple of years has been very rewarding. With MUA celebrating 30 years of excellence in the personal lines space this year, I am very proud of my association with the Company.
MUA is equally proud of its technology and I was lucky enough to be part of the team that developed our in-house, bespoke insurance platform over the last 5 years. Having access to the latest technology as well as the right skills is definitely an asset to our business.
What character traits set you apart?
I’m analytical, with a fine eye for detail – but not at the expense of losing focus on the bigger picture. As a participative leader, I take the time to listen to all stakeholders and I also find learning new skills or gaining knowledge a very rewarding experience.
What do people generally not know about you?
I grew up in a family of five brothers – in a very small mining town called Hotazel – which literally means ‘hot as hell’. Trust me, the town really lives up to its name!
What was the first song you developed an obsession for?
The 1988 hit, Orinoco Flow by Enya.
What was the first gig you went you?
I attended Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee concert in London in 2002 – with around one million people gathered around Buckingham Palace – it was unforgettable!
What’s the best piece of ‘life advice’ you’ve ever been given?
Treat others in the way that you would like to be treated.
What’s your favourite down-time activity?
Playing piano and relaxing with friends and family.
What inspirations outside of work impact your life?
Living a balanced lifestyle – making enough time to relax, learn new skills, experiencing new things and making a difference in somebody else’s life.
What makes you laugh?
Stories (fact or fiction) about ordinary people in extraordinary situations – the likes of the characters in the nineties’ sitcom Seinfeld.
What do you dislike?
When people have disregard for each other and don’t think of the impact their actions have on others and their environment.
What can we expect from you in 2018?
In partnership with my team, to lead MUA into its next 30 years of serving the needs of discerning individuals that require the highest level of service and product excellence in risk management.
