One minute with Grant Smith
Tell us about you...
I moved to MUA shortly after qualifying as an actuary and have been at the company for nearly a year and a half now. Before MUA, I worked at RisCura Solutions in the investments space and then Munro Consulting Actuaries in the actuarial damages space.
What has been a standout feature at MUA so far?
Being hired as MUA’s first ever actuary and getting to know the inner workings of the business
What character traits set you apart?
I’m pretty good at creative problem solving and I can find simple solutions to complex problems. The ability to focus on a specific task for long periods of time is a great asset, I think.
What do people generally not know about you?
I am quite the adventurer at heart. I love travelling to new places. My next trip is to Nepal, starting out with a 10-day trek in the Himalayas followed by some time in a national park with the chance of spotting Asian rhinos and tigers.
What was the first song you developed an obsession for?
Growing up I really enjoyed listening to a rock band from San Francisco, Third Eye Blind.
What’s the first gig you went to?
I can’t remember the first but I do love music and have been to many gigs. A memorable concert was watching the Kings of Leon play at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State, USA. We had road tripped for two days just to get there and it was worth all the effort.
What’s the best piece of ‘life advice’ you’ve ever been given?
Life’s a long-distance race – courtesy of my dad.
What’s your favourite down-time activity?
Hiking, trail running, camping, nature and the outdoors. I also enjoy playing the guitar.
What inspirations outside of work impact your life?
My family, friends and travel.
What makes you laugh?
My cat, she’s a quirky little animal.
What is it ‘you can’t stand’?
Closed mindedness.
