One minute with Hugo van der Merwe
Tell us about you...
I have 15 years of experience in the insurance industry, more specifically in the claims environment where I have gone full circle from the investigation, underwriting and the management of claims departments.
What has been a standout feature at MUA so far?
What has deeply influenced my work here at MUA has been my background and experience – which together with my qualifications – help to minimise losses resulting from unlawful activity. I believe every organisation has a profound responsibility for sound governance for the greater good of all our stakeholders and I am proud to play my part.
What character traits set you apart?
I have been trained to be thorough and persistent in my work and I am not easily diverted from my objectives.
What do people generally not know about you?
I consider myself quite reserved so there is quite a lot people do not know about me. I do not have any ‘hidden talents’ and I do not play any musical instruments.
What was the first song you developed an obsession for?
‘You’re my first love’ by New Romance – a direct result from ‘My first love’.
What was the first gig you went to?
The Depeche Mode 101 Concert in Nürnberg, Germany.
What’s the best piece of ‘life advice’ you’ve ever been given
Always trust your gut feeling.
What’s your favourite down-time activity?
I love the great outdoors, especially the remote areas of Botswana.
What inspirations outside of work impact your life?
Probably my children inspire me the most.
What makes you laugh?
I love a really good stand-up comedian. Eddy Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld and Trevor Noah hit the spot for me.
What do you dislike
Wasting time in queues.
What can we expect from you in 2018?
I’ll be continuing the good work to create an ever more sufficient claims department at MUA.
