One minute with Lynda Brown
Tell us about yourself?
I can look back with fondness at more than 35 years’ experience in the Personal Lines market. Previously, I was employed at large corporate company, but the last 8 years have been here at MUA – where everyday challenges enhance my growth and knowledge.
What have the highlights been for you at MUA?
There has not been a particular feature, rather it is a continuum. A lot was considered when moving to MUA, however not once have I questioned my decision. At MUA you are a team – you work together for the betterment of all stakeholders. It is with pride that you step out into the market to represent MUA.
What has been a standout feature outside of your insurance career?
The opportunity to join IKZN Council 12 years ago was a watershed moment. From the role of Chair Education – my absolute passion – to President has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. My greatest achievement thus far is the Christine Allen award in 2016 based on outstanding contribution to the Short Term Insurance Industry in KwaZulu-Natal through performance and commitment to the industry.
What character traits set you apart?
I think I’m a sound ‘bouncing block’ and a good listener. I can turn a negative situation into a positive one to ensure the result is beneficial to all involved. I thrive in imparting my knowledge to others and I am a mentor to my colleagues. High moral standards and work ethics are very important to me.
What do people generally not know about you?
I am quite self-critical and quick to judge myself.
What was the first gig you attended?
Coming from a conservative background, this had to be our Church disco.
What’s the best piece of ‘life advice’ you’ve ever been given
Be proud of your achievements and remain confident in your own abilities.
What’s your favourite down-time activity?
My down-time is ‘me-time’ with a good run. That and a captivating book –fiction rather than non-fiction.
What inspirations outside of work impact your life?
My family, the love of animals and the pure beauty of nature.
What makes you laugh?
My friends.
What do you dislike?
Lies – there is only one path to follow – the absolute truth.
What can we expect from you in 2018?
Through the support and encouragement with our team, aim for even better results than those achieved in recent years.
